I like to take pictures, especially close-up flower shots like these from my garden. I take a lot of these.
I never quite knew what my fascination was about until I read this quote from Georgia O’Keeffe, a gifted artist known for her sensual large paintings of flowers.
“Nobody sees a flower really; it is so small,” she said. “We haven’t time and to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time…I decided if I could paint that flower in a huge scale, you could not ignore its beauty.”
My photography practice ensures that I slow down when I need to and take the time to appreciate the simple pleasures of a vibrant pink peony or a “hand-painted” foxglove. I retreat for a moment from the phones and computer work to the solace of a sunny garden where I take a closer look at the miracles all around me and emerge refreshed.
What are you missing these days that deserves your time and attention? An authentic conversation with a friend or colleague? A lunchtime walk in the park that puts your workday in perspective? A fun, stress-reducing hobby that got pushed aside with all your busyness?
