Make your Best Move!

By Lakecia Carter, PMP

There have been several times in my life when I’ve moved from one physical location to another. If you’ve ever moved before, I’m sure you will agree that the most dreaded aspect of any move is the packing! Every time I’ve gone through years and years of “stuff” I’ve accumulated, three things happened during the process: I found some things I forgot I had. I found some things I needed to throw away. I found some things I had been looking for and could still use. As a PM, when we are preparing to go into new territory, we must go through years and years of training, education and experience or our PM Toolkit. I believe the same three things happen to us. Here are 3 tips to keep in mind when it does:

If you find something valuable that you forgot you had, revive it!

Early in our careers, we learned some of the basics. These basics were so enlightening and there were several aha moments we experienced when we were “new” to this profession. Even with innovation, it’s not always about creating something new. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of getting back to the basics. Tools and templates are great, but it doesn’t take the place of good ‘ole table manners. “Please” and “Thank You” never go out of style!

If you find something that’s not useful anymore, get rid of it!

Let’s face it. There’s some old stuff that we just need to throw out. What we did ten years or even two years ago may not be relevant today. It’s important to understand industry trends and adapt to a new way of doing things. Bring in new mindsets, new approaches and new ideas.

If you find something you’ve been looking for and really need to use – reinforce it!

It’s a great feeling when you find something you’ve been missing for a long time! It’s also good to know when you have something of great value in your possession. In your toolkit, there are some tried-and-true tools and techniques that always work! When creating fresh ideas for your project, you can never get too much of: Communication, Collaboration, Teamwork, Creativity and Flexibility. Keep replenishing your supply!

In many ways, preparing for innovation and change is just like preparing for a big move. You have to go through your PM Toolkit to ensure you are well-equipped for the journey. When you do, you will always find some things that you need to revive, get rid of, and reinforce. Then you can make your best move!
