If It Isn’t Broken Still Break It: Creative Career Thinking [Part I]

by Rick Forbus, Ph.D.

How’s your career going? If you can be perfectly honest, would you say that you have:

  • Hit the wall?
  • Drifted into a boring abyss?
  • Settled for a job and not a career?
  • Become complacent and lazy?
  • Slipped away from your original enthusiasm and passion?
  • Missed “signals” from your Boss and Peers that you are on your way out?
  • Traveled down a career path so far that you think you can’t start over?

Are there other feelings that warn you that your career is adrift and without some intervention and creativity, you may be stuck or stranded?

Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.     Pablo Picasso

For the sake of full disclosure, I believe career coaching is a powerful answer for getting unstuck. My personal experience substantiates coaching as a solution, as well. I had a coach help me see my potential, and myself clearer when I had career blindness. If we could understand the paradigms we get caught in that trap and restrain us in career and life situations, then, we would push through to success every time. We would transition and improve alone if we could see our environments and relationships clearly from “ground level.” Very few have the focus and resilience to set in motion breakthroughs without advocacy or coaching. See an excerpt from this fine article from selfgrowth.com.

This article has some great tips. Who will hold you accountable for these tips? The strongly initiated, the powerfully self-energized, the functionally focused will make it to the “other side” of career breakthrough without any outside help! Then, there are the rest of us.

For many, many years I could only “see myself” as what I was doing. My struggle was that it was difficult to “see” what I wanted to “be” or “become” from the middle of my “doing” tasks on my list. What I was doing was fulfilling to a degree, but my best and ideal version of “me” was still allusive. Until I allowed outside counsel and coaching to intervene, I’m not sure if my journey would have ever gotten to where I am now.

Creativity, as a thought process, is not natural for everyone. Out-of-the-box thinking is especially hard for the transactional thinkers who process data linearly and see life on a horizontal time line. The difficulty for many people that desire coaching services to make a career shift or a life change is visualizing a new “place” to invest their passion. For them, it is almost impossible without some serious paradigm-busting work, to get to another realm of thinking. How do you get “there” from here if you cannot even see it?

Everybody is creative, and everybody is talented. I just don’t think everybody is disciplined.     Al Hirschfeld
