How Big is Your Small Idea?

By Lakecia Carter, PMP

Have you ever thought your idea was too small?  Maybe you felt it wasn’t an earth shattering breakthrough or the most popular. If you’ve ever experienced this or if you are experiencing this now, I have good news for you. Your small idea is a big deal! Small ideas are the seeds of innovation. As the seeds grow, they produce something significant. Managing projects gives us the opportunity to come up with new ways of thinking and doing. Oftentimes, it is something very simple that makes a big difference.

So, how do small ideas become great ones?

Small ideas become great when you have a vision. Remember that every big idea wasn’t born that way. It started with a foundation and someone just built upon it. Even if it’s your idea or someone else’s, you have to see its potential and how it can grow.

Small ideas become great when teams collaborate and exchange ideas. Teams bring the diversity of perspectives that you can never get on your own.  A quote from George Bernard Shaw sums it up well: “If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples then you and I will still each have one apple.  But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas.”

Small ideas become great when they focus on continuous improvement. It only takes a small change to make things simpler, easier, or better than before. Use every opportunity to make a positive change in your team or project.

No matter how small an idea may seem, vision, collaboration and a passion for improvement, can make it a great one. Take that first step and plant the seed for innovation on your project!

What small idea can you come up with today that will make a big difference?
