Get Ready to Grow!

By Lakecia Carter, PMP

Be careful what you ask for, because you may get it. In your PM career, have you ever asked for a “challenging growth opportunity” and it turned out to be more than you bargained for?  I’m sure we can all agree that no matter how many certifications we have or how many years of experience, there is always room to grow and learn. Over the years, I’ve had many growth opportunities, some I asked for and others I didn’t.  Either way, I’m convinced that these opportunities make us better leaders as a result. Here are some tips that will help you maximize your next growth opportunity:

The most important change that needs to happen is in your mindset.  One key to success is effectively balancing two critical project management approaches:  On the planning level, it requires a global, strategic approach taking into account the “big picture”. On the execution level, it requires a sharp, laser-focused, results-oriented approach. Having the ability to effectively manage on both levels will give you a huge competitive edge.

In your new opportunity, you will have new stakeholders and a new culture to adapt to.  You may need to spruce up your toolkit depending on the needs of the project and the team. A good barometer for success is the team. If it doesn’t work for the team, it doesn’t work. No worries, just solicit input from your team and be open to adapting your toolkit.

Be prepared to stumble because projects are never void of challenges. When you make a mistake, quickly apply the lesson learned and move on. Re-charge frequently by limiting negative, defeating thoughts and pity parties. Maintain your resiliency and confidence in spite of challenging times.

What are some of the ways that you re-think, re-tool and re-charge when faced with your growth opportunity? Please share!
