Facing the Facts

By Bob Rausch, Ph.D.

Are you spending time and energy on doubts and uncertainty about the future?

At times everyone is concerned about their future.  When you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel it does have a tendency to create fear.  You have two options when faced with the unknown.

  1. Spend energy worrying about what might or could happen.
  2. Decide what you are going to do about it – Today.

Energy Performance Tip:

Early in my career I had a mentor and friend named Jack Dedman. Poppa Jack, as we called him, was an elderly gentleman who was amazingly wise about business and life. In one of our conversations I mentioned to him that I was feeling fearful about my future and the opportunities weren’t looking too good. Poppa Jack’s response was, “Bob, when you spend too much time worrying and fretting about tomorrow it’s best to shift your attention to the facts of today and take action on them.”  Then he shared with me this unforgettable little phrase that I use each time I face uncertainty;

“Three took a walk one day; Fact, Faith, and Feeling. Feeling fell down and faith fell too. Fact lifted faith and feeling came too.”

When the future looks dim there is a tendency to experience doubts and uncertainties.  Poppa Jack’s solution was to face the facts and put all your energy into what you can do today. Facing the facts of the day gets you back on track.

Henry Ford II stated it this way: “Nobody can really guarantee the future. The best you can do is:

  • Size up your chances
  • Calculate your risks involved
  • Estimate your ability to deal with them
  • And, make your plans with confidence.

Are you having some doubts about the future?  What are the facts you can focus on today?  Doubts and uncertainty are the activities of the head and have possibility of putting passion into motion. I found a quote by Margaret Drabble that perfect fits this energy message.

“When nothing is sure, everything is possible.”
