Four Tips on How to Earn PDUs on the Go!

A key requirement for being a successful project manager is the ability to stay on the go…all the time! You may have missed it in the PM job description, but it’s there if you read between the lines. How else could you be “responsible for the overall direction, coordination, implementation, execution, control and completion of specific projects ensuring consistency with company strategy, commitments and goals” unless you were on the go? This type of responsibility can’t be fulfilled from behind your desk, it happens on the front lines.

Staying on the go makes it challenging to keep up with the 60 PDUs requirement you need to maintain your PMP certification. The following four suggestions will help you maximize the time you are on the go with the learning you need to grow!

“I Forgot My Password!”

Here’s the scenario. You are 600 miles from home and had a full day of meetings with your client. You’re back in the hotel room and have an hour or so to kill. You’ve been meaning to enter the PDUs you’ve earned over the past couple of months on the PMI website and this seems like a great time to catch up. One problem, you can’t remember your username (your 6 digit PMI ID) let alone which of the dozens of variations of your password you used!

One recommendation is to use KeePass as a password manager. The KeePass home page describes the product as “…a free open source password manager, which helps you to manage your passwords in a secure way. You can put all your passwords in one database, which is locked with one master key or a key file. So you only have to remember one single master password or select the key file to unlock the whole database. The databases are encrypted using the best and most secure encryption algorithms currently known.”

There are other options available for password management (such as RoboForms), but this one is a good (and free) solution that will help keep your dozens of usernames and passwords secure and accessible.

“My Battery Just Died!”

It was supposed to be a 2-hour flight. Just enough time to listen to a couple of Project Management courses and earn some PDUs. You end up sitting on the tarmac for a couple hours due to bad weather and your 2-hour hour flight just turned into a 4-hour flight!

It would be great to take this extra time and catch up on a couple more PDUs but your battery just died. How disappointing! Make sure this never happens again by having some form of rechargeable battery pack and charger with you whenever you travel.

The options and variations to choose from are endless. Do a Google search or stop by an electronics store to find one that meets your travel durations and budgets.

“I Ran out of PDUs!”

The other scenario you may find yourself in is that you have plenty of battery power, but are running low on PDUs! As a rule of thumb, I carry at least five “not yet listened to” courses on my iPhone at all times. Then, when you find yourself stuck in traffic, or waiting for someone who is running late for a meeting, you can take this “found time” to catch up on your PDUs.

Rather than becoming frustrated or aggravated because you have to wait for someone or the ride home is taking longer than expected, make the most of this time to do something you need to do anyway…earn PDUs! There are PDU packages that are bundled that range anywhere from five to sixty PDUs. And, just like anything else you buy in bulk, you will find these are typically less expensive.

One More Suggestion for Mobile PMPs

Based upon feedback from our customers who are looking for portable and affordable ways to earn PDUs, we recently launched a new service called the PDUs2Go Mobile PMP™ Club. The Mobile PMP club offers exclusive programs, value-added content, and real-time offers to our PMP community world-wide…at no cost.

The PDUs2Go Mobile PMP™ Club is for members only who selectively subscribe to participate. It’s easy to subscribe or unsubscribe to this spam-free service. By texting PDUs2Go to 90210, you can subscribe. By texting stop to 90210, you can unsubscribe.

At the very least, a text message every now and then will be a gentle reminder that you need to keep up with your PDUs before too much time passes. But, we know you’ll find the benefits of signing up for our Mobile PMP service will exceed your expectations.

We hope you find these four suggestions helpful as you continue down the path of your PMP career. Keep your login and password readily available, always have a backup battery with you when you travel, keep enough PDUs on your mobile device, and join our Mobile PMP Club! By just doing these four things you’ll find it easy to keep up with the requirement to earn 60 PDUs every three years.
