NEW DAY, NEW JET

How to face each day with courage and fly to your potential

7 September 1990; 1000 hrs

The air conditioned briefing room felt as cold as ice as I waited for the arrival of my instructor.  I was a bundle of nerves.  One more ‘busted’ check ride would put me a flight away from washing out of one of the most intense and stressful training programs of my life – Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT).  My dream of becoming a pilot hung by a thread.  I began to doubt myself.

What if I mess up again?  What if I forget to call ‘gear down’ on final? What about the spin recovery maneuver? What if I miss one of the steps? I chair flew and practiced the maneuvers over and over and I knew what needed to be done but I began to second guess myself. I kept re-playing in my head the previous flights I failed.  My confidence dwindled and I could feel the sweat pour down my back.

In walked the instructor who would decide my fate, Major Jerry Free.  He was the commander of the UPT squadron, a former F-4 fighter pilot who had little tolerance for mediocrity and laziness. At 6’3 and with buzz cut hair and shiny boots, he was the epitome of an Air Force fighter pilot. I was intimated to say the least.

Not knowing what to expect, I stood at attention, braced myself, and saluted smartly.

He quickly saluted back, looked me in the eyes, and reached over to shake my hand. “Ok, Waldo – it’s a new day, new jet! Are you ready to pass this flight, or what?”

He smiled.

Suddenly, the energy of the room shifted and I instantly became more confident and empowered.  All the stress and anxiety I had bottled up exploded out of me like a bullet and transformed itself into a shot of positive adrenaline.  My mind became clearer as I thought to myself, “I can do this. Today, I’m going fly like Chuck Yeager.” Major Free believed in me.

New Day, New Jet. Wow! I never heard that expression before. But somehow, those four words and the man who spoke them instantly changed my attitude from fear to focus…from anxiety to action…just like that. I was ready to fly.

Some of you reading this may be facing similar predicaments in your life that are testing your resolve, skill, and focus.  Perhaps you are experiencing financial challenges or are having concerns at work as your company and clients adapt to our volatile economy. Missed sales quotas, budget cuts, and lost customers plague us. Mistakes happen.  No mission is ever perfect, and neither are we. (more…)

COMMIT COMMIT! Where Discipline Meets Action

Monday, May 31st, 2010

By Rob “Waldo” Waldman, Lt. Col., CSP

December 21, 1998—a brisk winter day in Saudi Arabia. I was stationed on my first combat deployment, flying missions to enforce the Iraqi southern no-fly zone. Inexperienced and quite nervous, I was scheduled to take off on only the fourth combat sortie of my career. It was a mission I’ll never forget.

I was flying that day with my flight lead, Lt. Col. “Hos” Hyatt, the commander of the 79th Fighter Squadron Tigers. Our “2 ship” of F-16s were charged with “sanitizing” the airspace of any enemy aircraft that might be crossing the restricted area. It was a routine patrol. Or not.

Suddenly, our radios blared with an urgent call from the radar ground controller, “Viper flight, you’ve got an MIG-23 150 miles off your nose headed south … hostile, hostile!” This meant the MIG had crossed the no-fly zone and was headed toward us and the fuel tankers we were in charge of protecting. A split second later, my headset erupted with a call from Hos. “Viper flight, COMMIT, COMMIT!” Almost unconsciously, I pushed up my throttle to afterburner and started to climb, as I struggled to stay in perfect formation with Hos. There was no turning back. We were going after that MIG. (more…)

SPEED IS LIFE

Friday, April 30th, 2010

By Rob “Waldo” Waldman, Lt. Col., CSP

On time, on target – the key to outstanding business execution

For a fighter pilot in combat, speed is everything.  It improves maneuverability, allows faster target engagement, and it can be ‘converted’ to a higher altitude for better situational awareness of the battlefield. Speed is also essential when aborting a mission or avoiding a formidable threat.  It can save your life.

That’s why we have a saying in the jet fighter community: Speed is life.

Those three simple words took on a new meaning for me, my squadron and a group of engineers in April of 1999, and taught me a vital lesson. (more…)

Walk the Flight Line

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

By Waldo Waldman, CSP

It’s extremely rare for the squadron commander to meet you at your jet after a training mission, so when I saw Lt. Col. Dodson approaching my jet with a stern look on his face, I knew something was up.

“Waldo, we need to talk,” he said as he headed for the aircraft hangar. “Yes, sir!” I replied, and waited, a little uneasy, for what was coming next. Had I messed up? Was I in trouble? I gulped. Was something wrong at home? (more…)

The Secret Ingredient to Business Success

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

By Waldo Waldman, CSP

Jules Ormont once said, “A great leader never sets himself above his followers except in carrying responsibilities.” In business the more you increase the altitude of your success the less rights you have. When you are the CEO of a company you no longer have the right to a vacation, when you are the owner of a business you no longer have the right to get paid and when you are in management you no longer have the right to be respected. When you hold leadership position you have to earn your vacation, you have to earn your next paycheck and you have to earn the respect of your employees.

Work It Now!

How Winners Deal with Adversity

I remember the first time I was deployed to Iraq during Operation Southern Watch.  I sat in an intelligence mission briefing with 50 of my fellow fighter pilots (my wingmen) where we were briefed on the multiple threats that scattered the enemy terrain in Iraq.  The SAM’s (surface to sir missiles) and AAA (anti-aircraft artillery) were everywhere – each with the reach and power to shoot us out of the sky.

I couldn’t help but notice the anxious feeling that was in the pit of my stomach. The dread, panic, and fear were almost overwhelming.  For the first time in my military career, I was going to be tested in combat. It was ‘go time’…time to put all my training…the years of study, focus, sacrifice, and sweat…to the test. From the Air Force academy where I learned the fundamentals of discipline and teamwork, to the 79th Fighter Squadron where I learned to fly the sophisticated F-16 and the complicated tactics necessary to defeat the enemy. All of this training would soon be put to use.
