Optimize Risk Management…. Optimize PM Performance

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

By MaryGrace Allenchey, PMP

Experienced Project and Program Management (PM) Professionals acknowledge Risk Management as a significant and critical process of Project and Program Management (PM) best practices.

Therefore rigorous procedures are required to effectively identify, assess and respond to risk events… the uncertainties that pose potential threats, as well as potential opportunities to projects and programs.

Projects and programs reside in that uncertain environment and are therefore by their very nature a “risky” undertaking.

Most projects and programs are initiated to deliver a new product or service, implement new methods, procedures or technologies, enable new skills and capabilities, enhance polices or processes, explore strategic alternatives … and the list goes on.

Risk is the cumulative effect of the chances of uncertain occurrences positively or adversely affecting the project and program objectives.

Managing “uncertainty” is the fundamental premise and primary objective of Risk Management best practices.

Effectively applying the following six processes of Risk Management (RM) promotes successful delivery of quality products and services that meet or exceed stakeholder functional specifications and performance expectations: (more…)

Motivating Management…Energizing and Engaging Your Team of Stakeholders

Monday, May 31st, 2010

By MaryGrace Allenchey, PMP

It is appropriate that you expect optimal results from the assets invested in your strategic project and program initiatives. These initiatives must meet or exceed planned budget and schedule expectations, as well as produce high quality products and provide superior service for your clients.

To ensure optimum performance, your team of stakeholders must therefore be fully and competently engaged throughout the lifecycle of the project or program.  As Project Managers, you must energize all stakeholders, including end-users, functional-managers, senior management, implementation team members, vendors, etc., to optimally perform their required functions and continuously contribute effectively, to project and program success.

Many believe that motivational techniques are dependent upon the type of project team and may argue: (more…)

Diamond Discovery…. Optimized Capabilities

Friday, April 30th, 2010

By MaryGrace Allenchey, PMP

Effectively establishing and leading creative individuals, diverse teams and unique talents is critical to optimize the success of Enterprise performance.  Yet, best practices Project, Program and Portfolio Management (PM) require disciplined and structured orchestration… leading by means of clever maneuvering of the team of experts… to optimize their efficiency and proficiency.

These two seemingly opposing paradigms are in fact, effectively and successfully synchronized and integrated by continuously applying DIAMOND DYNAMICS®.

Organizations and enterprises identify their required, unique talents and skills to perform their critical functions, activities and tasks; and subsequently recruit and select the various individuals and/or teams. When performance does not meet expectations, it is typically not a competency issue….the human resources are not incompetent…. I have never seen a job ad that says:“Incompetents Please Apply”!… Performance problems arise when individual or team capabilities are frustrated… human resources do not have the opportunity to perform optimally! As the Conductor…ORCHESTRATE!

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

By MaryGrace Allenchey, PMP

The leadership role of the enterprise project, program or portfolio manager correlates directly to the role of a conductor… the leader of a trio, quartet, band or orchestra!

The conductor must optimize the performance of the various instrumental groups as well as each of the individual musicians. The string, wind, brass and horn sections, as well as the players of each individual instrument…. violin, viola, bass, cello, harp, oboe, clarinet, flute, saxophone, French-horn, trombone, trumpet, piano, guitar and/or drums… must all be apprised of the composition to be performed and exactly when their instrument must be played!

The conductor orchestrates… leads by means of clever and thorough maneuvering of the team of experts…to optimize the expertise of each musician, and deliver synchronized and harmonious music to the audience!

Enterprise Pyramid = Enterprise PM

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

By MaryGrace Allenchey, PMP

To continuously improve financial performance and sustain organizational growth, enterprises must continually review and establish strategic goals.  These performance goals are determined by an objective “SWOT” assessment to evaluate the organization’s Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats; and to decide upon the specific ventures to pursue during the next fiscal cycle as well as future cycles.

Strategic goals must be effectively communicated throughout the organization and realized through successful implementation of specific initiatives.  Individual business units or operational departments must effectively manage initiatives, and ensure their functional teams and individuals successfully perform the tasks to deliver the required products and services to attain enterprise goals.  Performance at every level must be managed and monitored to ensure alignment with the stated goals.  There must also be an effective management discipline to monitor and track the alignment.
