Pessimistic Thinking: See the Upside of the Downside

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

By Jennifer Whitt, PMP

“The nice part about being a pessimist is that you are constantly being either proven right or pleasantly surprised.” – George F. Will, Columnist & Author

Studies have shown that Pessimistic Thinking can be a detriment to your health, a symptom of depression, a disadvantage in the popularity contest, or even a precursor to failure.  In 2002, a study published by scientists at the Mayo Clinic showed that people who expect misfortune don’t live as long as those with a more optimistic way of thinking. In a 2004 study, Dutch scientists discovered that self-described pessimists often had higher rates of cardiovascular death than optimists. So as you can see, the outlook for pessimistic thinkers is not so optimistic.

Understandably, you may ask why Pessimistic Thinking is even targeted as a way of thinking. This valid question has a complex answer. It may help you to consider that Pessimistic Thinking is also a form of “realistic” thinking. When making an important decision, a rose-colored, optimistic view can blind you to obvious problems. A dose of reality from the pessimistic thinker can save you and those working with you from preventable failure by revealing areas of risk you might not otherwise see.

Secondly, you will inevitably work with a pessimistic thinker. Learning to appreciate this person’s input will broaden your understanding and patience for this thinking style. And, finally, at some point you might lead a person or a team that’s focused on the downside – and possibly weakened because of it. (more…)

Analytical Thinking: Let Reason Rule

Monday, May 31st, 2010

By Jennifer Whitt, PMP

“It’s a funny thing about life; if you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it.” – Somerset Mougham, Novelist

You know the analytical thinkers in a room – they don’t hesitate to ask questions or challenge the expert. With a style that resembles an FBI profiler, these thinkers tackle a problem head on, and they’re careful to never assume anything. All facts are checked, all stones are turned.

After verifying the facts, the analytical thinkers can apply the faculty of logic to dissect a problem into individual parts. They then “paste these analyses together with a logical glue” to construct a sound solution. (more…)

Intuitive Thinking: Feel Your Way Forward

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

By Jennifer Whitt, PMP

“Never ignore a gut feeling, but never believe that it’s enough.” – Robert Heller, Businessman

Women’s Intuition is often hailed, but both men and women possess an inner faculty that allows them to intuit solutions to a problem. When making important decisions, working with team members, and leading a group of people, a “sixth sense” can help you navigate through the gray areas – those times when there’s no clear answer.

While everyone can exercise their intuition, many people are afraid to use it; some will even deliberately do the opposite of what they feel. How do you use the intuition you’ve got? With the little practice, that knowing voice can grow louder. And with a little trust in yourself, you can learn when and how to listen to it.  (more…)

Assertive Thinking: Get Your Groove On

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

By Jennifer Whitt, PMP

“Success is 99 percent failure.” – Soichiro Honda, Founder, Honda Motor Corporation

If there is a radical thinking style, Assertive Thinking is it.  With raw ambition and individual flair, the assertive thinker will often take over a project – for better or worse. Through sheer will, this thinker can move mountains, but she sometimes causes an earthquake in the process.

However, it’s the courage to try that makes the assertive thinker exceptional. Consequence is secondary to possibility.  A problem is often an opportunity to shine. (more…)

Resolute Thinking: Make it Happen!

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

By Jennifer Whitt, PMP

“Let us not be content to wait and see what will happen, but give us the determination to make the right things happen.” – Horace Mann, American Educator

There’s a time for contemplation and a time for action.  The resolute thinker attacks a problem with authority and gusto – never wasting a moment on indecisiveness. He’s a quick thinker you want on your team, especially during times of crisis.  He pinpoints the center of a problem and faces it head on.

As a thinker, can you think on your feet during a crisis?
As a team member, how do you work with a resolute thinker who’s in crisis mode?
As a leader, are you able to position this thinker so he succeeds without stepping on the toes of others?

Our resolute thinker occasionally pulls a false alarm but he does know how to tackle the hotspot in a situation.

The new economy is going to continue to require us change our thinking to Make it Happen! If you are needing an immediate solution, tackling complex issues among multiple teams, getting the team to move forward or identifying the source of a problem, resoluteness is going to be a key to your success.  If this is not your strong suit, I recommend strengthening an underutilized area of your brain you may have forgotten you have or identifying and identifying and leveraging those who excel in this area.  Sitting idle is not a choice.

PDUs2Go 2009: The nostalgia of 8 Colorful Characters and a journey of their minds

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Thousands flocked to the site in August of 2007 to experience the Portable & Affordable™ Self-Paced courses and a new way to earn & learn™ with the nostalgia of a cast of 8 Colorful Characters and a journey of their minds

Press Release
Published: 8:24PM EST 17 Aug 2009

Two years ago, over thirty frenzied days of an exciting launch party, a new website became the centre of the attention with an extraordinary lineup of courses, which ultimately changed the history of the way PMPs earned PDUs.

Jennifer Whitt, PMP, Author of Optimize Your Thinking™ and the infamous Pizza Party™ launched these two courses, which had been recognized as GREATEST HITS among her corporate clients since 2005.

Unlike the original launch party in 2007, there was little frenzy among the thousands of the PMP customers but they still flock to buy these original GREATEST HITS. At the original launch, an unexpectedly large number of PMPs joined our community and tried our unheard of offer of 2.5 PDUs for $1 and referred their friends around the world.

Jennifer Whitt, PMP – Founder of PDUs2Go.com opened the 2nd Birthday Party on August 1 with the Birthday Bundle, the complete collection of all courses available since the original launch, and David Nour threw in yet another new FREE gift for our customers – Social Networking Best Practices on Twitter.

Customers today still load their iPhones and iPods, self-consciously downloading courses with a simple click of a button, invoking a distant memory of the cost and inconvenience of traditional course room and online training.

It all started two years ago with two courses – Optimize Your Thinking™ and the infamous Pizza Party™, globally recognized now as GREATEST HITS of PDUs2Go.com. Who knew that the nostalgia of 8 Colorful Characters and a journey of their minds along with a simple dish that every kid [and, project team] loves would start such a trend.
