How to Beat the Skeptics

by Drew Stevens, Ph.D.

Skeptics always take me aback. They provide opine on issues that they never try but desire to discredit. They tell you how crazy or how stupid or what a waste.

How to Beat the SkepticsIt is only their opinion. They refuse to experience new ideas, contrary thoughts or experiences. They only want you to listen to them. They believe you are crazy and they pragmatic.

Yet if you look at history, our entire ancestry is based upon crazy ideas. Such examples include Capt. Standish and the Mayflower, Benjamin Franklin during the American Revolution, Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War, Henry Ford and the assembly line, Thomas Edison and electricity. Many called them nuts but they established paths of new direction and thought.

The next time you have a crazy idea, go with it. Do not listen to unsolicited feedback; follow your heart. If you are passionate then follow the path to where it leads you. Stop listening to naysayers that don’t like risk, don’t engage in forward thinking and don’t have courage. Look within and believe your crazy idea leads you to higher levels of achievement. As Steve Jobs used during his product launch upon return to Apple, “Here’s to the crazy ones.” So go crazy!

Recipe for Success

by Drew Stevens, Ph.D.

Two years ago for a Fathers Day present my family gave me a wonderful present – gourmet-cooking lessons. I learned a great deal about knife skills, temperature, meats, stocks etc.

Recipe for SuccessHowever, the greatest lesson about building a recipe is using a foundation and then continues based on your desire for taste and texture. This will require multiple taste tests until you get it right. Just like a recipe, life is not perfect.

There will be times when you will attempt certain things and they do not go according to plan. You need to try new things and change course so that you gain a better outcome. As long as you have foundation you will be fine.

Stop trying to live life as a perfect recipe. You need to continue to mix and match ingredients as well as try new things to develop the proper end product.

How to Handle Life’s Challenges

by Drew Stevens, Ph.D.

I just finished one of my recent Practice Acceleration seminars. When the roller coaster of life seems to threaten your ideals and you are under despair remember the following:

Check Your Baggage1. Ignore unsolicited feedback.

2. Remain close to those who will support you.

3. Find the power of the mastermind.

4. Failure is an option; use it as fuel to accelerate the practice.

5. Check your baggage and compartmentalize issues.

6. Visualize success; you are a gift from above and God does not allow failure.

7. Live each moment in life, tomorrow may never come.

Cockiness and Project Management

by Drew Stevens, Ph.D.

I enjoy movies and I am particularly interested in watching the metamorphosis of certain characters. It is always interesting to see how certain characters appear meek or introverted Cockiness and Project Managenmentonly to obtain confidence from their work. However, what the viewer experiences is the change from confidence to cockiness. Sometimes this develops from power, for some it is money. No matter what there is a bold line between confidence and cockiness.

Most recently I visited with my ophthalmologist for my annual checkup. I have been a patient for well over 16 years. I enjoy the doctor and believe he is well studied. However without going into much detail I experienced two very poor experiences in the office. Naturally I called and emailed to express my concern. It is now 12 days later and no reply.

The reason why some managers thrive while others try to survive is their admiration and empathy towards others. Customer service is a vital marketing nuance to companies and it must be employed daily. Doing well with your project is terrific and kudos for all that do! However, as your project grows it your confidence cannot grow exponentially to overshadow it with cockiness.
