Innovating with ConnectAbility

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

By David Ryback, Ph.D.

There’s a new generation in the workplace—more focused on process over endgame, on people over paycheck, on personal development over company loyalty.  The values of what we might refer to as the Status Generation have yielded to those of the Awareness Generation.  ConnectAbility fills the needs of this new workplace by providing the skills necessary to work with others—whether as peers or reports—in a manner that allows for the authentic recognition of others’ needs, both social as well as emotional.  Research—under such banners as emotional, social, moral, executive intelligence and other forms of multiple intelligences—has validated the utility of this new approach to interpersonal communication.

Class Clown

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

By Jeff Justice, CSP

For years, I’ve earned my living making people laugh, but I was funny long before I did it for money.

As a kid, I was always the class clown. Somehow, I instinctively understood the power of humor — that if I said something funny in class and it made my teacher laugh, I wouldn’t get in trouble. Of course, if she didn’t laugh, I got a chance to rehearse and try it again on the Principal. If I didn’t get a laugh there, I got to do it again in his office for my parents. Sometimes I did two or three shows a day…sometimes even an after-school matinee!

Closing the Past to an Energized Future

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

By Bob Rausch, Ph.D.

It’s imperative that you close the mental, emotional and physical door on your previous employment or team association. If you carry any anger, frustration, fear or regret into your transition it will decrease your energy and establish a pattern that will negatively affect your new position.  Here are some steps to close the door and refocus personal energy:

  1. Say “Good-Bye” – figuratively and literally. DO NOT leave without telling superiors or team members that you appreciated the opportunity to be a part of the organization. This is especially important if you feel you have been “wronged” in some way. If you can’t say good-bye in person write the person(s) a note and express it in writing.

Creativity And The Critical Voice

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

By Don Goewey

No one gets to the end of a creative process without slaying the dragon. The dragon is the critical voice in your head that says your work is no good. It says your effort is useless. It looks on a mistake and says you are worthless, devoid of brilliance.

If you cannot look that dragon straight in the eye, tell it to go to hell and proceed forward with the next step, the next sentence, the next brush stroke, your vision is lost. It will be swallowed hole. Nothing will come of the goal you once held with resolve and enthusiasm.

There is no getting around it. It takes courage to create. Success sometimes involves making a ton of mistakes and still coming back to try again. If one does that, then he or she will climb higher. It’s the law. Thomas Edison said, “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time. The law is this: If you don’t give up you win. You reach the summit.

Creativity in Project Management: It’s not Rocket Science, or is it?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

By Lakecia Carter, PMP

What comes to your mind when you think of Project Management? Do you view it as a means to an end, a way to get things done, a way of life? When was the last time you thought of Project Management as an art? The “art” aspect of Project Management is what I call the soft side: Leadership, Motivation, Inspiration, Relationship, Team Building, to name a few. In my experience as a project manager, my opinion is that 90% of a project manager’s job is Art and 10% Science. Creativity and Innovation are born out of the 90% – not the 10%.

Good news is you don’t have to become Einstein or come up with all of the ideas by yourself. Great news is that you can lead a team that drives and delivers innovative solutions to your clients. You can do this by recognizing and responding to basic human behaviors that can influence creativity in Project Management. Here are three ways you can spark creativity in your role as a PM:

Four Secrets to Project Management Success

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

By Drew Stevens, Ph.D.

As the year ends there are four things for all to think about in the new year. As others resolve personal and professional resolutions, project managers might desire contemplation on four simple concepts to help make projects operate more completely.

  1. Start early – The best projects begin with a plan that are completely mapped out and focus on outcomes. The old adage of fail to plan and plan to fail is gruesome for project managers. Begin the process to ensure all understand milestones and tasks so that all are accountable.

Adaptive Innovation™

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Value creation is derived from value chain disruption. Adaptive innovation, by definition, is destructive in its character, open to a broad base of business models, and must be driven by high performing teams focused on maximizing the current and future capabilities of their respective organizations.
