By Mac M. Martirossian, CPA

Stress Makes you Stupid

Monday, August 31st, 2009

By Caroline Nightbird

Multitasking messes with the brain in several ways. At the most basic level, the mental balancing acts that it requires — the constant switching and pivoting — energize regions of the brain that specialize in visual processing and physical coordination and simultaneously appear to shortchange some of the higher areas related to memory and learning. We concentrate on the act of concentration at the expense of whatever it is that we’re supposed to be concentrating on… studies find that multitasking boosts the level of stress-related hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline and wears down our systems through biochemical friction, prematurely aging us. In the short term, the confusion, fatigue, and chaos merely hamper our ability to focus and analyze, but in the long term, they may cause it to atrophy.

Talking Does Not Mean They’re Hearing: Communicating in the Workplace

Monday, August 31st, 2009

By Rick Forbus, PhD.

In a recent coaching session, a “star” manager shared the frustration of unclear, inconsistent and untimely communication in the organization where he manages. Actual deliverables in this organization are above expectations and money is good. The problem is that mixed signals come from the top and he feels insecure. The head leadership is bright, successful but unskilled in communication.

Monday, August 31st, 2009

By Linda Henman, PhD.

  1. Don’t over schedule.  Leave time in every day for unexpected events because almost every day brings at least one. In addition to having more control of your day, you’ll reduce stress.
  2. Set 30/ 60/ 90 day SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time sensitive) goals for your personal and professional life.  Activities that don’t support these goals don’t go on the calendar.  Set weekly goals that support these.

Monday, August 31st, 2009

By Mark Jankowski

In past articles, we have taken a look at our systematic approach to the negotiation process – The Three Ps – and discussed the first and second “P” “Prepare” and “Probe.”  Now it is finally time to sit down at the negotiating table and make a deal.  After all, this is what you have been working towards.  Creative, profitable and effective proposals utilize thorough preparation and in-depth probing techniques. In the final analysis, any proposal will only be as good as the negotiator’s preparation and probing.

Watch Your Wake!

Monday, August 31st, 2009

By Pamela A. Scott

See if this situation sounds familiar to you.

Susan, manager of a mid-size firm, was exasperated.

“I need help handling Larry, one of my project managers,” she said. “He’s never been a real upbeat guy, but the current economy really has him down. He exudes pessimism every time he opens his mouth.”

“And he doesn’t care who is around to hear it,” Susan continued. “It’s having a negative effect on his staff—well, really on all of us. I need to keep people optimistic and busy. His attitude is making that very difficult for me.”
